Rambo

Chapter IX

The island was beautiful. It had been years since I stepped foot on it, but it was just like I remembered it. Mckenzie was enthralled. Her head whipped from side to side, and she couldn’t stop gasping at the sights in front of her. The water, the sun, and sand had her mesmerized. I carried her bag on my shoulder, while rolling mine behind me. We were given a private villa on the resort with a chef. Gillian made sure that I was set for this trip, and I would be sure to give her a little extra for her troubles.

The villa had sliding glass doors that were pushed all the way back into the wall, allowing the outside to pour into the living room. The linen curtains blew in the breeze, and a bucket with ice and wine were seated on the coffee table. A tray of fruits and cheeses sat on the counter in the kitchen, and the rectangular pool ran against the lush grass. Two lounge chairs flanked it, along with a large umbrella to block the beating sun.

“This is…unbelievable,” Mckenzie breathed, walking out and staring at the ocean that greeted us. Her white sundress wrapped around her ankles, and her hair blew all around her face. One thing about her that I couldn’t quite get over was her hair. It was so damn long. It almost seemed tedious to have hair that long, but she never complained. It looked incredibly thick, and it was jet black.

“You like?” I asked, dropping the bags and tucking my hands in my jeans. I had shed my shirt once we landed, and was only in my wifebeater. It was too damn hot for layers.

“Like? Hell no, this isn’t the type of place that you just like. I fucking love it.”

I couldn’t help but chuckle at her. One minute she was a lady, and the next, she was dropping big girl curse words, without blinking. I picked up a grape and popped it in my mouth, feeling my stomach starting to rumble. I hadn’t eaten since the night before, and the flight was long as hell. Mckenzie had been grazing on anything she could get her hands on, but if I knew her as well as I thought I was beginning to, I knew that she was going to want a meal soon.

“Can I stay here forever?” Her arms stretched out, and she threw her head back, closing her eyes.

“If that’s what you want, I think I can make that happen for you.”

Looking back at me, she smirked, “I was kidding.”

“Oh. Well, say the word if you change your mind.”

“I could never afford to stay somewhere like this. I never even thought I would leave our state, let alone end up here. Before you mentioned it, I had never even heard of the Maldives.”

“I mean, what do you have waiting for you back home? Why not start over somewhere else? And if you had to choose, this ain’t a bad choice.
